Telangana Health department warns of surge in monsoon illnesses

As Telangana braces for a spell of monsoon rains, the State Health Department has issued a crucial advisory warning citizens about a potential spike in monsoon-related illnesses. With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting light to moderate rainfall across the state and a heavy rainfall alert for the next two days, health officials are stepping up efforts to minimize the spread of seasonal infections.
⚠️ Surge in Illnesses Anticipated
Dr. B. Ravinder Nayak, Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, highlighted the increased risk of vector-borne, water-borne, and airborne diseases during the monsoon. He noted that lower temperatures and high humidity create an ideal environment for illnesses like dengue, malaria, chikungunya, typhoid, viral fevers, jaundice, gastroenteritis, and influenza to spread.
🦟 Combating the Mosquito Menace
To prevent diseases like dengue and malaria, the public has been urged to take proactive measures at home:
Use mosquito screens on doors and windows
Sleep under mosquito nets, especially at night
Apply mosquito repellents regularly
Clear and clean household drains to avoid water stagnation
Ensure septic tanks are covered with mesh
Observe ‘Friday Dry Day’ by emptying and drying containers, pots, and trays where water may collect
💧 Guarding Against Water-Borne Infections
Monsoon rains often lead to the contamination of water sources. To prevent infections like typhoid, jaundice, and acute gastroenteritis, citizens are advised to:
Drink only filtered or boiled water
Avoid outside food, especially if stale or uncovered
Wash hands thoroughly before eating and after using the restroom
🤧 Precautions Against Airborne Diseases
With seasonal flu and viral infections on the rise, the Health Department urges people to:
Avoid shaking hands when unwell or around sick individuals
Use hand sanitisers frequently
Cover mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing
Visit the nearest government health facility if experiencing symptoms like fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, or headache
🏥 Emergency & Healthcare Support
In case of a health emergency, citizens can call the ‘108’ ambulance service.
To manage any potential outbreak, the state has ramped up preparations across public healthcare centers. These include:
Provision of special beds, IV fluids, essential medicines, and ORS (Oral Rehydration Salts)
ANMs, ASHAs, and Anganwadi workers have been equipped with medicines and ORS sachets for quick community response
✅ Stay Informed, Stay Safe
As monsoon showers bring much-needed relief from summer heat, they also bring a host of health challenges. The Telangana Health Department’s timely advisory is a reminder that prevention is better than cure. A few simple precautions at home and in daily routines can go a long way in keeping you and your family safe this monsoon.
