Pahalgam attack blow to entire humanity; supporting terror, terrorists shouldn't be acceptable: PM Modi at BRICS Summit

Pahalgam attack blow to entire humanity; supporting terror, terrorists shouldn't be acceptable: PM Modi at BRICS Summit

At the recent BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a powerful and heartfelt address, condemning the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 innocent civilians. Calling it not just an attack on India but “a blow to the entire humanity,” PM Modi emphasized the urgent need for a unified and uncompromising stance against terrorism.

Terrorism: A Shared Global Threat

Describing terrorism as one of the most serious challenges confronting humanity today, PM Modi stressed that BRICS nations must rise above political convenience and adopt a clear, unified stance on terrorism. He firmly stated:

“There should be no hesitation in imposing sanctions against terrorists. For personal or political gain, giving silent consent, supporting terror or terrorists, should not be acceptable.”

Modi’s words were a direct appeal for collective accountability   urging countries to move beyond rhetoric and take decisive action.

No Double Standards on Terrorism

PM Modi criticized the double standards that often plague international responses to terrorism, pointing out that:

“Victims and supporters of terrorism cannot be weighed on the same scale. On a subject like terrorism, there is no room for double standards!”

He cautioned that any nation providing direct or indirect support to terrorism must be held accountable, and added that silence or passive support for terror is equally culpable.

India’s Moral Standpoint: Peace Over Politics

Drawing from India’s rich philosophical heritage, PM Modi reiterated the country’s commitment to peace, invoking Mahatma Gandhi and Gautam Buddha:

“India, being the land of Mahatma Gandhi and Gautam Buddha, believes that no matter how difficult the circumstances are, the path of peace is the best option for the welfare of humanity.”

He reassured that India would continue to champion peace and cooperation through global platforms like BRICS.

A Voice for the Global South

Beyond terrorism, PM Modi addressed systemic inequities in global governance, especially those affecting the Global South. He pointed out that nations with significant contributions to the world economy are still excluded from key decision-making forums, saying:

“This is not just a question of representation, but also of credibility and effectiveness.”

He also criticized the superficiality of token gestures in areas like climate finance, sustainable development, and technology access, which have long marginalized developing nations.

Reforming Global Institutions for the 21st Century

PM Modi underlined the urgent need for reform in international institutions, asserting that symbolic reforms are no longer enough. He stressed:

“In the age of artificial intelligence, where technology is updated every week, it is not acceptable for a global institution to not be updated even once in 80 years. 21st-century software cannot be run by 20th-century typewriters.”

He called for visible and effective changes in governance structures, voting rights, and leadership roles within global institutions to reflect today’s geopolitical realities.

India’s Commitment to a Multipolar World

As the BRICS summit kicked off with a group photograph and remarks by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, PM Modi reiterated India’s dedication to working in the interest of humanity, stating:

“India has always considered it its duty to rise above its own interests and work in the interest of humanity.”

Conclusion

PM Modi’s speech at the BRICS Summit was a clarion call for global unity against terrorism and a wake-up call for structural reforms in global governance. His message was clear: terrorism cannot be tolerated in any form, and global institutions must evolve to truly serve all of humanity, not just a select few. The Pahalgam attack may have shaken a nation, but Modi’s words at BRICS resonated far beyond borders   reminding the world that peace, justice, and cooperation must prevail over silence, terror, and inequality.
