Nepal parliamentary delegation explores investment potential at HIP

In a bid to deepen regional ties and explore new avenues of economic cooperation, a high-level delegation from the Federal Parliament of Nepal recently visited the Hambantota International Port (HIP) in Sri Lanka. The visit, which aimed at strengthening bilateral collaboration, offered Nepalese officials an in-depth look at the port’s infrastructure, strategic location, and growing investment prospects.
The delegation included notable members such as Padma Prasad Pandey, Secretary General of the Federal Parliament of Nepal; Dr. Rojnath Pande, Secretary of the Federal Parliament Secretariat; Laxmi Prasad Gautam, Joint Secretary; Bhojraj Sharma Paudel, Under Secretary; Rekha Upadhyaya Khanal, Under Secretary; and Chivantha Galanga, Parliamentary Officer from Sri Lanka. The group was given a comprehensive tour of HIP’s state-of-the-art facilities and briefed by senior officials on the port's operations and long-term development strategy.
During the visit, HIP representatives shared insights into how the port’s unique location in the southern tip of Sri Lanka, along with its multipurpose capabilities, positions it as a strategic logistics and maritime hub in the Indian Ocean region. With modern facilities catering to port services, logistics, and industrial development, HIP is emerging as a crucial node in regional connectivity and trade.
HIP officials emphasized the port's commitment to fostering international partnerships and extended an open invitation to Nepalese businesses and investors to explore collaboration opportunities with the Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG). The discussions revolved around potential ventures in trade facilitation, cargo handling, warehousing, and industrial setups, which could benefit both Nepalese enterprises and the broader South Asian economic landscape.
The Nepalese delegation’s visit is seen as a meaningful step toward enhancing cross-border commercial partnerships and reinforcing economic dialogue between Sri Lanka and Nepal. It underlines HIP's growing reputation as not just a transshipment hub, but also as a platform for regional investment, trade diversification, and sustainable industrial growth.
