Google brings AI Mode in Search to India: Ask anything, ask any way

Google has officially begun rolling out its AI Mode in Search to users across India, ushering in a new era of smarter, more intuitive searching. This revolutionary feature transforms the way users interact with Google Search, allowing them to ask complex, multi-layered questions and receive detailed, AI-generated answers all within the search results. However, to begin with, AI Mode will only be available in English.

A Smarter Way to Search

Unlike traditional Google Search, which primarily responds with a list of blue links, AI Mode uses artificial intelligence to generate complete, context-aware answers. This allows users to get the information they need without clicking through multiple websites. Whether you're planning a vacation, comparing tech gadgets, or trying to understand a scientific concept, AI Mode makes it easier to get detailed explanations in one place.

First introduced in the United States earlier this year, the feature was made available in India via Search Labs in June for early access. After months of testing and feedback, Google is now making AI Mode widely accessible in India, eliminating the need to join a waitlist or opt-in.

How Google AI Mode Works

Google’s AI Mode is powered by its Gemini 2.5 model, designed to handle detailed and multi-part user queries. When a user asks a question, the AI breaks it down into sub-queries using a method known as “query fan-out.” It then searches the web for relevant information and compiles a concise, summarized answer. Users will also see useful links for deeper exploration and have the option to ask follow-up questions directly.

Using AI Mode in India

Accessing the feature is simple:

  • Look for the “AI Mode” tab in your Google Search results or in the search bar of the Google app.

  • You can type a question, use voice input, or even upload images via Google Lens.

For instance, if you take a photo of a plant and ask how to care for it, AI Mode can identify the plant, offer step-by-step care instructions, and link you to relevant guides or products.

Google reports that early adopters have been asking much longer and more detailed questions sometimes two to three times longer than usual queries seeking in-depth guidance and actionable advice.

Current Limitations

While this is a huge leap forward, there are a few limitations to note:

  • Currently available only in English, though Google plans to add support for Indian languages in the future.

  • The feature is still experimental, and in some cases, if the system isn't confident in its AI-generated answer, it will default back to traditional search results.

The rollout is happening gradually, and users can expect to see the AI Mode feature appear in their search results on both desktop and mobile platforms over the coming days.

With AI Mode, Google is redefining how we seek and consume information, making the search experience more interactive, personalized, and intelligent. Whether you're curious, confused, or just exploring, now you can ask anything and ask any way.
