Immunity First: Protecting Livestock in Tamil Nadu

The Department of Animal Husbandry has officially launched a large-scale vaccination drive against Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) in Vellore and Ranipet districts, aimed at protecting the region’s livestock from a highly contagious viral disease. Initiated on Wednesday, this crucial step is part of the National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP), a centrally sponsored scheme to enhance livestock immunity and ensure economic stability for dairy farmers.

Coverage Across Species and Districts

The vaccination, which is administered free of cost twice a year, will benefit a wide range of livestock including milch cows, buffaloes, bulls, goats, sheep, and pigs. “Generally, the vaccination against the disease is done in September and February, depending on vaccine availability,” said Dr. G. Anbuvan, Assistant Director, Department of Animal Husbandry, Vellore.

In Vellore, the three-week drive running up to July 22 will immunize around 1.85 lakh cattle, while Ranipet will vaccinate approximately 1.90 lakh cattle by July 31. District Collectors V.R. Subbulaxmi (Vellore) and J.U. Chandrakala (Ranipet) officially launched the campaign in their respective regions.

Wider Impact Across Tamil Nadu

Among neighboring districts, Tiruvannamalai has the largest number of cattle to be vaccinated this season, with 7.44 lakh animals, followed by Ranipet, Vellore, and Tirupattur (1.15 lakh). This coordinated effort plays a vital role in preventing livestock loss and boosting farmers’ income by reducing disease outbreaks.

Symptoms and Seasonal Risks

Veterinarians emphasize the importance of timely vaccination to combat symptoms like high fever, boils in the mouth and feet, swelling, and weight loss. The disease, which spreads mainly via airborne transmission, is particularly active during cold and monsoon seasons, notably between November and December in these regions.

Conclusion: A Step Toward Livestock Security

This extensive FMD vaccination initiative reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to animal health, farmer welfare, and rural economy protection. Through early intervention and consistent immunization, Tamil Nadu is taking strong steps to curb disease outbreaks and support sustainable livestock farming.
