Vivek Chaturvedi takes charge as new CBIC Chairman
The Union Government has appointed senior IRS (Customs & Indirect Taxes) officer Vivek Chaturvedi as the new Chairman of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), marking an important leadership transition for India’s indirect tax administration. The decision was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet and formally notified by the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT).
A 1990-batch officer, Chaturvedi steps into the role following the completion of tenure by his predecessor, Sanjay Kumar Agarwal of the 1988 batch, who demitted office on November 28, 2025. His appointment also comes in the wake of the retirement of Vivek Ranjan, Member (Tax Policy & Legal), who superannuated on August 31, 2025.
Chaturvedi has built a distinguished career over more than three decades, serving in multiple critical capacities across the Customs and GST ecosystem. Before joining the CBIC board earlier this year as a Member, he held the position of Principal Director General of Vigilance and Chief Vigilance Officer. In that role, he was instrumental in strengthening vigilance oversight, improving integrity mechanisms, tightening internal controls, and promoting a culture of greater transparency and accountability within the indirect tax machinery.
His extensive experience in vigilance, compliance management, and indirect tax operations positions him to provide both continuity and renewed momentum as the CBIC faces a rapidly evolving policy landscape. With India’s GST regime undergoing continuous refinement and global trade dynamics shifting, Chaturvedi’s leadership is expected to play a key role in enhancing enforcement, modernising systems, and guiding policy reforms.
As he takes charge, stakeholders across government, industry, and trade will be closely watching how his tenure shapes the next phase of India’s indirect taxation framework—balancing efficiency, compliance, and digital transformation within one of the nation’s most critical administrative bodies.
