Russia simplifies trade processes to expand India links

Russia is accelerating its efforts to strengthen economic ties with India, focusing on smoother logistics, easier payment mechanisms, and a broader presence of Indian products in its domestic market. With bilateral ambitions set at $100 billion by 2030, both countries are working towards a more balanced and diversified trade relationship.

Expanding access for Indian goods
During the India-Russia Business Forum held in New Delhi, Maxim Oreshkin, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office of the Russian Federation, emphasized that India’s export potential to Russia remains underutilized. He called for increased supplies from India across key sectors such as consumer goods, food products, pharmaceuticals, telecom and IT equipment, industrial parts, and even labour resources.
India’s exports to Russia in FY25 stood at $4.88 billion, highlighting significant room for expansion especially as both nations push toward long-term economic alignment.

Improving logistics and payment systems
A major part of Russia’s strategy involves easing logistics hurdles and establishing smoother payment channels to support cross-border trade. These improvements are designed to make it easier for Indian exporters to enter the Russian market, ensuring faster movement of goods through international transport corridors.

Strengthening bilateral trade goals
Russia and India have set an ambitious vision: achieving $100 billion in bilateral trade by 2030. Maxim Oreshkin praised India’s robust economic performance recording over 8% growth in the past five years and highlighted the global reputation of Indian companies such as Mahindra, TCS, Wipro, and Tata Motors. He also acknowledged India’s strong pharmaceutical exports, noting that the country supplies generic medicines to over 150 nations.

Enhancing connectivity and sectoral opportunities
Russia’s Minister of Economic Development, Maxim Reshetnikov, affirmed that bottlenecks in connectivity are being systematically addressed, particularly through international transport corridors linking India and Russia. He emphasized that Russia is adopting AI-driven productivity improvements and sees enormous opportunities for India in sectors like e-commerce and tourism. With less than 1% of Russian tourists currently visiting India, the potential for growth is substantial.

A strategic partnership for the future
As Russia works to open its market further and India continues its upward economic momentum, both nations are gearing up for a more robust trade partnership. Simplified processes, stronger connectivity, and sector-specific collaboration are set to define the next phase of India-Russia economic engagement bringing new opportunities for businesses on both sides.
