Russia Signals Interest in Importing Indian Fish, Meat; Eyes Joint Trout Development Project

Introduction
Russia has shown strong intent to increase imports of Indian fishery and meat products, marking a new phase of cooperation in the agrifood sector. The Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying confirmed the development after a high-level meeting held on the sidelines of the 23rd India–Russia Annual Summit.

Strengthening Fisheries and Meat Trade
A visiting Russian delegation, led by Agriculture Minister Oxana Lut, expressed readiness to deepen trade ties in fisheries and meat. During discussions with India’s Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan ‘Lalan’ Singh, both sides reviewed opportunities to expand market access and accelerate establishment listings for Indian exporters. The talks highlighted India’s growing capacity in seafood exports and Russia’s expanding demand.

India’s Export Performance
India exported fishery products worth USD 7.45 billion in 2024–25, with USD 127 million directed to the Russian market. Minister Singh emphasized India’s ability to diversify its seafood export basket with shrimp, prawns, mackerel, sardines, tuna, crab, and several other species. As Russia looks to broaden its sourcing channels, India’s competitive pricing and production scale offer a strong foundation for growth.

Focus on Trout Development
One of the key discussions included a proposal from the Russian side for a joint technical initiative aimed at trout development. This collaboration could lay the groundwork for future joint ventures in aquaculture. Russia’s interest aligns with its goal of strengthening domestic trout production while leveraging India’s technical expertise and emerging aquaculture technologies.

Technology and Research Collaboration
Both countries also explored opportunities in research, education, and modern aquaculture technologies. Areas such as deep-sea fishing vessels, advanced processing systems, and innovative farming models were discussed to improve efficiency and expand production capabilities. These steps aim to build a sustainable long-term partnership in the fisheries and animal husbandry sectors.

Strengthening the Agrifood Partnership
Minister Oxana Lut noted that India is already Russia’s second-largest shrimp supplier and stressed the need for a comprehensive framework to enhance agrifood cooperation. She highlighted Moscow’s commitment to strengthening agricultural ties rooted in the long-standing partnership between the two nations.
