Mumbai Port Authority to build ₹470-crore world-class yacht marina at cross island
A New Milestone in Mumbai’s Maritime Transformation
Mumbai’s waterfront is set for a monumental upgrade as the Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA) announces the development of a world-class yacht marina at Cross Island, located near Princess Dock and Victoria Dock. With a massive investment of ₹470 crore, funded entirely through the authority’s internal resources, this landmark project is poised to reshape the city’s maritime leisure landscape.
A Strategic EPC-Mode Development
According to MbPA Chairman M Angamuthu, the project will be executed on the EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) model to ensure timely and high-quality implementation. Once the marina is built, its operation and maintenance will be entrusted to a private operator for 45 years. The selected concessionaire will further invest ₹417.37 crore to develop onshore facilities across 4.2 hectares.
World-Class Onshore Facilities
The ambitious onshore infrastructure will include:
• A modern yacht repair yard
• A premium clubhouse
• A hotel and restaurant
• Passenger and commercial amenities
• Advanced mooring systems
• Reclaimed land development for enhanced user experience
These facilities are designed to meet global standards and attract both domestic and international yachting enthusiasts.
Phased Development with Massive Berthing Capacity
The marina will be developed in three phases:
• Phase I: Berthing for 424 yachts
• Phase II: Additional 172 berths
• Phase III: Dedicated berthing for eight super yachts
The waterfront will feature an approach trestle, breakwater, pontoons, gangways, and world-class berthing infrastructure, ensuring safety, efficiency, and luxury for yacht owners.
Boosting Mumbai’s Marine Ecosystem & Skyline
Describing the project as “Mumbai Port’s signature project,” Angamuthu highlighted that the marina will significantly enhance Mumbai’s maritime ecosystem. It will also contribute to improving the city’s iconic skyline and support broader waterfront revitalisation efforts. The project aims to address the current shortage of yacht berths an issue evident with nearly 200 leisure boats moored near the Gateway of India due to lack of formal facilities.
New Revenue Streams & Growing Market Demand
The marina is expected to generate substantial revenue through docking fees, yacht repair services, and a dedicated fuel station. With rising interest in leisure boating across India and limited existing infrastructure, the demand for yacht berths is poised to grow rapidly.
A Fresh Development Approach After Earlier Setbacks
Previous attempts to develop a marina at this location under the PPP model received no bids. This prompted the shift to the EPC route with a revised implementation strategy ensuring greater feasibility, control, and timely completion.
Driving India’s Yachting & Tourism Growth
As leisure boating gains popularity in India, this state-of-the-art marina is expected to be a major catalyst for the yachting and tourism sectors. It will not only cater to domestic yacht owners but also attract global luxury maritime tourism to Mumbai.
Conclusion
The upcoming Cross Island yacht marina marks a defining step toward transforming Mumbai into a premium maritime leisure destination. With its strategic planning, robust investment, and world-class infrastructure, the project promises to unlock new opportunities for the marine economy while enriching Mumbai’s coastal charm.
