Mahindra XEV 9S: Top 3 pros and 2 cons from my driving experience

Mahindra XEV 9S: Top 3 pros and 2 cons from my driving experience

Mahindra has officially entered the three-row electric SUV space with the launch of the Mahindra XEV 9S  its first all-electric, three-row, seven-seater SUV. Priced from ₹19.95 lakh (ex-showroom), the XEV 9S becomes the third EV under Mahindra’s Born Electric series, joining the XEV 9e and BE 6. Built on the same INGLO platform, it inherits familiar design cues yet stands apart with its own unique identity. In many ways, it feels like an electric iteration of the mighty XUV700   but with a futuristic twist.

I had the opportunity to drive the Mahindra XEV 9S around the scenic roads of Nandi Hills, near Bengaluru. Here are the three pros and two cons that stood out during my drive.

Mahindra XEV 9S: The Good Things

Blends XEV 9e and XUV700 design
The design of the XEV 9S immediately grabs attention. It strikes a balanced look more subtle than the aggressive XEV 9e yet carrying modern EV styling. The front profile features LED headlamps and sharp LED DRLs inspired by the XEV 9e, while the side and rear resemble the XUV700 with EV-specific touches. The mix feels familiar, futuristic, and family-friendly.

Premium and practical cabin
Inside the cabin, the XEV 9S combines premiumness with practical utility. Mahindra clearly prioritized space, and it shows across all three rows. The sliding second-row seats and electrically adjustable Boss mode enhance comfort, while the triple digital screen setup, slick gear shifter, and retractable panoramic sunroof elevate the overall cabin experience. Seven passengers can sit comfortably, making it a strong pick for families.

Power-packed performance
Sharing the INGLO architecture with the XEV 9e and BE 6, the XEV 9S delivers a lively and smooth performance. The steering is ultralight, making it effortless to maneuver through city roads, hill inclines, and hairpin bends. The SUV handled both upward climbs and descents in Nandi Hills confidently, absorbing patchy road surfaces without fuss.

Mahindra XEV 9S: The Bad Things

Pricey package
While the XEV 9S offers advanced tech and a premium feel, its pricing ₹19.95 lakh to ₹29.45 lakh (ex-showroom) may be steep for many buyers. For families seeking a budget-friendly electric SUV, this price range could pose a challenge.

Cramped feeling at third-row seats
Despite being a three-row SUV, the third row feels tight. Headroom, knee room, and legroom are limited, which may be uncomfortable for taller occupants. It works for kids or short-distance seating, but not ideal for long drives.

Conclusion

The Mahindra XEV 9S enters the Indian EV segment with a strong personality modern design, spacious cabin innovation, and impressive driving dynamics. While the pricing and third-row space leave room for improvement, the SUV still positions itself as a premium, future-ready family EV. For those who want an all-electric, seven-seater with the reliability of Mahindra’s engineering and the sophistication of the Born Electric lineup, the XEV 9S stands out as a promising contender.
