India launches first indigenous hydrogen fuel-cell vessel in Varanasi
India has taken a historic leap toward sustainable mobility with the launch of its first indigenous hydrogen fuel-cell vessel at Namo Ghat, Varanasi. Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, flagged off the vessel on Thursday, celebrating a landmark achievement in the country’s journey toward clean and futuristic inland water transport.
The launch ceremony marked the beginning of the vessel’s commercial operations, attended by senior government officials and public representatives. Speaking at the event, Mr. Sonowal described the moment as a proud milestone for the nation, emphasizing that the hydrogen-powered vessel showcases India’s rising technological prowess and its commitment to green energy advancement.
He stated, “This is not just technological progress, but a sign that we are advancing confidently towards green energy and indigenous solutions.” With this breakthrough, India has joined an exclusive league of countries such as China, Norway, the Netherlands, and Japan that are operating hydrogen-powered vessels as part of their clean transport initiatives.
The minister highlighted that the achievement reflects the strong momentum created under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Inland waterways, especially in regions like Varanasi PM Modi’s parliamentary constituency are now emerging as crucial drivers of sustainable mobility, economic growth, and regional development.
The event witnessed the presence of several dignitaries, including Uttar Pradesh Minister of State for Transport (Independent Charge) Dayashankar Singh, Minister of State for Ayush, Food Safety and Drug Administration (Independent Charge) Dayashankar Mishra, and Minister of State for Stamp and Court Fees and Registration (Independent Charge) Ravindra Jaiswal.
According to an official statement, this launch is part of a wider initiative to modernize India’s inland water transport system. The focus is on clean and green mobility, enhanced connectivity, and improved passenger convenience reflecting the nation’s long-term vision for a sustainable transport ecosystem.
