‘If Rohit bhai isn’t scolding me, there is a sense of unease…': Yashasvi Jaiswal says bond with former captain different

Yashasvi Jaiswal has always worn his heart on his sleeve, and once again, the young opener opened up about one of the most special relationships of his cricketing journey – his bond with senior opening partner and former India captain, Rohit Sharma. Speaking at the Agenda Aaj Tak event, Jaiswal revealed how the understanding between them is built on trust, guidance, affection, and an unspoken connection that shapes his growth as an international cricketer.

A Maiden Century and a Memorable Partnership
Jaiswal recently registered his maiden ODI century during the three-match series against South Africa. Batting in Vizag while chasing, he delivered a composed yet commanding ton that helped India seal a comprehensive nine-wicket victory. His innings was marked by two crucial partnerships – one with Rohit Sharma and another with Virat Kohli – showcasing not just skill, but maturity in pacing a run-chase.

Over the past few years, Jaiswal has evolved under the mentorship of his senior Mumbai teammate Rohit Sharma. As an opener, he has spent countless hours absorbing Rohit’s wisdom, learning the rhythm of partnerships, and understanding the mental aspects of international cricket. It is no surprise that many view Jaiswal as a major pillar of India’s future batting lineup.

A Unique Bond With Rohit Sharma
Describing Rohit’s unique leadership personality, Jaiswal smiled as he shared an honest confession:
“Every time Rohit bhai scolds us, it has a lot of love and indulgence mixed with it. In fact, if Rohit bhai isn’t scolding you, there is a sense of unease… why isn’t he scolding? Has he felt bad about my action?”

Rohit may be seen as laid-back and easygoing, but those close to him know he switches to a serious mode when trying to bring out the best in youngsters. For Jaiswal, this dual nature is part of what makes Rohit such a powerful mentor – someone who guides with love, corrects with intent, and supports without boundaries.

Even though Rohit has stepped down from captaincy, he remains an influential figure – a senior statesman who leads through presence and personality.

‘Similarly, Virat paaji…’
Jaiswal also revealed how Virat Kohli, another stalwart of Indian cricket, played a key role in his development. Sharing a glimpse into the dressing room atmosphere during the Vizag ODI, he said:
“When I was playing the third ODI, Rohit bhai told me to relax, remain calm, and take time, saying he would take risks. How many people will do that? Similarly, Virat paaji gave me small targets and told me that we will have to win it ourselves.”

For a young batter, the reassurance of having two giants of the game at the other end can be transformative. With Rohit offering calm and Virat offering intensity, Jaiswal experienced the perfect balance during his match-winning century.

The Road Ahead
Though currently considered the backup opener behind Rohit Sharma and captain Shubman Gill, Jaiswal’s maiden ODI hundred is a promising sign of what lies ahead. His confidence, adaptability, and hunger for improvement provide India with depth as they prepare for future tours and major tournaments.

As long as mentors like Rohit and Virat continue to guide him   and scold him with love   India can expect many more memorable innings from Yashasvi Jaiswal in the years to come.
