DP World invests €230M to raise Antwerp port capacity
DP World has marked a major milestone in European logistics with the completion of a €230 million ($266 million) expansion at DP World Antwerp Gateway, set to go fully operational in 2026. This landmark investment will increase terminal capacity by 30%, further solidifying the Port of Antwerp’s position as one of Europe’s most advanced and integrated logistics hubs.
A Two-Decade Journey of Growth
Since opening its doors in 2005, Antwerp Gateway has transformed from a terminal handling just 70,000 TEUs to an impressive 2.4 million TEUs today. This extraordinary growth reflects DP World’s commitment to innovation, modern infrastructure, and smarter, greener trade operations across Europe.
Leading the Way in Terminal Automation
DP World Antwerp Gateway has long been recognized as a pioneer in terminal automation, setting industry standards with its advanced technologies and intermodal connectivity. The latest €230 million expansion focuses on:
New infrastructure development
Expanded yard space for denser container stacking
Upgraded digital systems to streamline cargo flows
Stronger rail and barge connectivity
Enhanced sustainability measures, including renewable energy usage
By 2026, the final four of 27 Automated Stacking Crane (ASC) modules will be operational, boosting efficiency and enabling higher container density without increasing footprint.
Digital Transformation for the Future
Looking ahead, DP World plans to launch its updated Zodiac Terminal Operating System (TOS) in 2028, which will deliver better planning, transparency, and operational precision throughout the terminal.
With a fully digitalised environment featuring biometric access controls, a Truck Appointment System, and the DPW Trucker App the terminal continues to redefine smart logistics. Its 750+ workforce is supported by renewable energy sources such as on-site biogas and wind power, ensuring greener, cleaner operations.
Leadership Speaks: Commitment to Europe’s Supply Chain
Rashid Abdulla, CEO & MD of DP World Europe, highlighted the long-standing vision behind this investment:
“For two decades, Antwerp Gateway has embodied our mission to make trade flow. This investment reinforces our long-term commitment to Europe, our customers and the communities we serve.”
Echoing this, Edi Cioran, CEO of DP World Antwerp Gateway, emphasized innovation and sustainability:
“From maximising existing space through modern technology to promoting night logistics and intermodal transport, Antwerp Gateway continues to push boundaries. Our focus on safety, digital innovation, and renewable energy ensures the terminal remains a European leader for decades to come.”
Strengthening Europe’s Customs and Trade Ecosystem
In another major development, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, NxtPort, and The Way Forward recently announced the full go-live of the Inbound Release Platform (IRP). This new digital system enhances compliance with Europe’s updated customs framework, ensuring smoother processing of incoming goods.
Conclusion: A Strategic Investment for Europe’s Future
With this €230 million expansion, DP World is not only enhancing the capacity of one of Europe’s busiest ports but also driving a new chapter of digital, sustainable, and resilient logistics. Antwerp Gateway's evolution reflects the future of global trade efficient, automated, interconnected, and environmentally responsible.
